Yangshuo Paper Umbrellas

The paper umbrella is a traditional Yangshuo handcraft with a history of more than 400 years. They are divided into two types: lacquered umbrellas and flower painted umbrellas. The lacquered umbrella tradition dates from the Tang dynasty (618-907) and was very popular until the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). The flower umbrella is based on the oil umbrella, formed by drawing and painting. These umbrellas' materials are mainly composed of local bamboo and white-sand paper (also called sha paper). The manufacturing is not complicated. First, the bamboo is flattened and smoothed, then soaked in a water-based solution. Second, the ribs, pole and handle is crafted. Third, they are pasted with white-sand paper, including wrapping and joining. Finally, they are painted them with lacquer. These paper umbrellas are a very distinct Chinese souvenir, available in many shapes with different paintings during your Yangshuo travel. The best place to find these traditionally designed Yangshuo paper umbrellas is in the village of Fuli.
